By way of example, in August 1993, defective glass was used to make export beer bottles. When opened or transported, glass splinters could fall into the beer. Heineken recalled, destroyed and replaced 15.4 million bottles. Nobody was injured, but at the time of occurrence, Heineken estimated the loss to be anything between $10m and $50m. Within the next 6 months, the share price had risen by 13% as a direct result of how well they handled the situation.
